The Strokes’ timeline is an interesting one. Is This It (2001) is one of the best albums of the century. Room On Fire (2003) has Reptilia, so its existence is justified. The same can be said about First Impressions of Earth (2005) in regards to You Only Live Once. Then came Angles (2011). Hated by some members of the band but enjoyed by many, including myself, it gave people a chance to see a side of their versatility, much like Derek Zoolander in a calendar.
And today they dropped One Way Trigger, the first single from their upcoming album. Already dividing fans, it’s a light, jangly thing, and probably comes closer to the genre of pop than anything they’ve done before. The direction they’re taking certainly seems to be much closer to Angles than anything before that, which is good, because no-one wants them to attempt to make Is This It for the fourth time.
